For the first time in ten years there was to be no exclusion zone in or around Stonehenge over the Summer Solstice period. Negotiations had taken place for some time between 'authoritative' and other interested parties, for this particular eventuality. Some of those involved were English Heritage, National Trust, Wiltshire Constabulary and Local Councillors on the one hand and representatives of The Council of British Druid Orders, Pagan Federation, Stonehenge Campaign, Astrologers and several other such interested parties. Contingency plans were made well in advance but as with most best laid plans of Mice and Men they did not or could not cover every eventuality. Or, as the president of the Astrologers Society put it to E.H., It couldn't possibly have worked, because all your best stewards were on buses ten miles away, and a joint leaflet had been prepared by the above bodies, and in the event was never handed out due to an oversight. For my part although privy to and, in fact one of the instigators in these negotiations, it was never my intention to be part of the select few (ticketed and /or ALLOWED) in. My intentention prior to the event was to be on the outside along with prominent Druids and others, leading and joining the pilgrims in worship whilst those fortunate enough to be allowed in to the centre circle would hold their ritual. My colleagues and I turned up around 10 pm, for an all night vigil with the pilgrims (those present). There are many versions of the events of that night varying from agent provocateurs and hard core trouble makers (but who in their right minds, trouble maker or otherwise is going to turn up to push down a fence that's not there) to gross stupidity on the part of the police. Suffice it here to say that for what ever reason, a section of perimeter fence, ( not incidentally the section which I positioned myself and thought most venerable) collapsed under sheer weight of numbers at 2 am and a large number of pilgrims simply walked into the Henge from which EH Security had already withdrawn. Following the pilgrims, I accompanied the former manager, properties in care, South West Region, EH into the Temple with a duty of care uppermost in both our minds. We observed no damage what so ever to the Temple and indeed at this stage the assembled pilgrims were thoroughly well behaved and impressed on me (the only white frock) their wish to join in the ritual at dawn. But Alas that was not to be! At approximately 3.30 am Wiltshire Constabulary moved in on direct instructions from their Divisional Commander to “sweep and clear the area” his words not mine. Whilst the police prepared for this operation and amassed their troops several of the pilgrims took it upon themselves to climb upon the Stone to avoid arrest or eviction. As it transpired they need not have bothered, for as soon as the area was cleared, (twenty three arrests and detentions for obstructive trespass, none of which will come to court). The pilgrims merely breached police lines and took control of the Temple once more. I cannot speak for what occurred at dawn, by which time as one of the twenty three, I was in custody. Having been forcibly ejected from the Temple and left with a decision between advancing toward the back end of a Police horse (one of six mounted officers used in the dead of night for crowd control with in the Stonehenge triangle) or to about face and join our boys in blue in our traditional game and national past time of British Bulldog. Two broken ribs later I was arrested, and (as for the other twenty two) to be released without charge. When cautioned the accused was heard to reply “ Thank **** for that!” One can hypothesise however, that having been forcibly ejected from the Stones by Police in riot gear, with dogs, helicopters and mounted officers in the dead of night, those that returned to the Temple would not have been, shall we say, quite so well behaved or reasonable as they may have, had they been left at 2 am to await the dawn. There is much to be learned from this exercise by EH, Wiltshire Constabulary and ourselves included, and in fairness to the authorities they do seem to be taking on board some of these concerns and compared to the so called riots of 1988 there was very little trouble, far less than one would expect at a football match or a political rally or indeed any other event which would necessitate normal policing, rather than imposition of the so called exclusion zone and nothing occurred that can not be sorted with a little give and take from ALL sides. Days since magazine publication:15 This year's issue ON SALE NOW Stonehenge 2000 - Sun rises over stonehenge - Summer solstice 2000 I headed for Stonehenge last summer Solstice excited at the prospect of seeing the sunrise there for the first time since 1984. This was tempered with the experience of the years in between and a feeling that some things are too good to be true. A 'u' turn by the authorities who have spent tens of millions of pounds keeping people out of the Stones for years? I am not a cynic by nature but the last fifteen years events at Stonehenge could convince the greatest optimist that a conspiracy rules over reason. Questions had begun to be asked by local tax payers about the annual mega-budget for the kill-joy operation, that has taken place in Wiltshire each June since 1985. At least £1/4 million from the local budget and ten times that to fund the MOD police manoeuvres, that co-incidentally take place around the Solstice on Salisbury plain. Imagine the scene at police HQ with their easy-overtime fund under threat. What they needed was a plan to secure 'hippy holiday money' for the next decade. If popular prejudice could be reinforced into the bargain then all the better. So a plan was hatched! Previously only a few lucky 'sun worshipers' had been allowed to apply for tickets for the Solstice sunrise at Stonehenge, to be bussed in at the appointed time. Crowds were discouraged with misleading news reports and the police hassled anyone walking in the direction of the stones with powers granted under a local procession banning order (the so called 'exclusion zone'). This year it was to be different. The media announced that there was no exclusion zone (in truth there never has been). Non ticket holders would be allowed to park in the vicinity and walk up to the field opposite the Heel stone. Here they would be able to watch the 'chosen few', who were previously bussed in ‘the back door’, walk up the road past the un-ticketed crowd who would respectfully stand and watch from a distance, while druidic types and other ‘approved’ visitors carried out rituals. Mr. Big plod knew that this plan would almost certainly 'go wrong', especially since his men would be carrying batons and shields and dressed in Judge Dredd style exoskeletons. Furthermore their colleagues at the Met in London had given a good hiding to some demonstrators, who were parading in solidarity with G8 protestors in Seattle, a few days previously and there was a fair chance of repercussions from those incidents to! Furthermore the media had sent out invitations to riot tourists announcing that there would be trouble at Stonehenge! The stage was set. The two groups of solstice revellers were to be played off against each other, and the police could secure their ‘Party Fund’ for the next few years in the wake of the disorder they had created. Some of the assembled crowd took the bait. Many were too young to have experienced the trashing of 1988 and some who were there had maybe failed to realise (again) that there was a clear walk into the stones on the flanks of the police lines, as there was at the 1988 summer solstice. Confusion, shouting pushing, shoving, thrown missiles and the eventual withdrawal of the police to jeers and cheers of the 'unwanted' gave Mr. ‘Big Plod’ all the ammunition that he needed to secure funding for his force's 'extra pocket money fund' into the next millennium! Negative forces are already predicting there will be trouble at Stonehenge this Summer Solstice, citing a flyer that has been in circulation since 1998 which simply states 'Reclaim our Culture', hardly an incitement to riot! Following more clashes between police and 'travellers' in Cornwall around the time of the eclipse Home Secretary Jack Straw made sweeping statements designed to make life harder for all Britain’s nomadic people. He implied that the only people with the right to travel were ethnic romanies. As with all identifiable groups in society there are good and bad folk, something that Mr. Straw acknowledges. All most all murderers, robbers and violent criminals lived in houses and had a ‘conventional’ appearance when they committed their crimes. It would be ignorance in the extreme to conclude that most people who live in dwellings constructed of bricks and mortar or who dressed in the current mode were in fact dangerous criminals. His failure to differentiate between trouble-makers, who just so happen to live in converted vehicles and trailers, and the majority of ordinary decent people who just so happen to live in similar dwellings misses an important point! The people who have suffered most at the hands of unruly 'travellers' are 'genuine' travelling people and festival goers. The actions of a few 'brew-crew' types mean that the rest of us are tarred with the same brush. The knock on effects of this manufactured prejudice are massive with harmless festival goers being given a hard time, for no good reason. Hidden biggotry is probably behind the unprecedented number of refused licences that haven't been granted to small festival organisers over the last year especially Baddam, Brighton, Severn revels, Lowlands
