Summer Solstice 2002
Roy Gillett reported on the Round Table meetings, he is also a member of the Planning Sub-Committee.

Summer Solstice open access 8PM to 6.30AM or 7AM 21st June. People wanted more daytime access. George mentioned that the problem is trained manpower, it is not possible to mount two shifts. Also local people want the road open as soon as possible. Arthur suggested a strip of field could be provided so people could walk to the carpark without using the road. This suggestion will be put back to the Round Table for future years.

Anxiety was expressed at the Round Table about the degree of drinking and drunken behaviour in 2001. There was a lengthy discussion about this. A complete ban would be confrontational and unforceable, it was thought. Better to target antisocial behaviour but still a security problem in how they can be dealt with, i.e. whether to exclude them. There will be two locations for decanting any drinks into plastic containers. Large quantities will not be admitted.

The role of voluntary stewards was discussed. Not as visible in 2001 as in the previous year. The professional stewards were very good. The role of voluntary stewards needs clarification. To prevent stone climbing security personnel will be permanently located at the climbing points. Lights will be turned off sooner before dawn.

Penny wanted the bus for disabled people to pick at more points in the field. This will also go back to the Round Table. Arthur reported that Clews is going to the EH Commission to ask when a naked flame is not a naked flame, so braziers might be employed at four points around the stones.

Helen and George spoke about a group access around the time of solstice in the afternoon. Nora reported that Special Access now costs £12 for everybody. The TRC needs more information before making representations about this.

Midsummer manoeuvres
Discussion about the period between the Open Access at Stonehenge and the first entry to the Glastonbury Festival which was reported to be on Wednesday 26th June. Supt Cockburn arrived at this point. Hampshire police will prevent any unauthorised gathering. He said one single guitar could represent an event that might require licensing, even if the landowner allowed people to stay there.

Event organisers
George had hoped that some of the events organisers we had spoken to last year might have come to this meeting, but they hadn't. Nevertheless there was a discussion about whether a legal event was possible, and Supt. Cockburn answered questions about this. He thought it was easier to accommodate people in small groups. Helen made an impassioned speech about why the tribe needed time and space to meet and share their experiences, some had not met for ten years, she said. Registered campsites were mentioned, Kasia said they often discriminated against people of unorthodox appearance and living vehicles. Arthur was of the opinion that it was impossible to run an event under present conditions and we needed to lobby to change the law.

Daylight access campaign
George asked if there was only 12 hours of access, would people be happy to give up the evening, in exchange for longer morning access. There were mixed opinions about this.

Date of next meeting
George will set one up in April.
